Description

This is the template that lets a DIY floating shelf sit truly flush to the wall. Used with a router, it guides a clean, straight recess into the back of your shelf so the Studlock DIY Bracket beds into the wood instead of holding the shelf off the wall — no gap behind it. It is cut from half-inch plywood, sized to match your DIY bracket (10 to 46 inches, matched to your shelf length), and comes with two wood screws to hold it to the shelf while you work. Use a 3/4-inch by 5/16-inch router bit (we sell one if you need it), and remember the order of operations: drill the support-rod holes first, then rout — the drilling guide will not fit once the recess is cut.

Brackets, jig and drill bit — meh

I purchased seven brackets, three jigs and a drill bit to drill a total of 18 holes in three different species of wood (mahogany, poplar and walnut). Two of the brackets arrived seriously bent and the wrong length drill bit was sent (too long). Customer service was very responsive and accommodating, sending new brackets right away, and explaining that the length of the drill bit was sent because they were having problems with their shorter bits. They kindly threw in for free a drill guide. The jigs were very helpful, especially with the drill guide. The jigs are notched out where the drill guide should sit, which makes accurate hole drilling very straightforward. The only room for improvement would be ensuring that the distance from the outside edge of the drill guide to the inside edge of the cut out is completely parallel. That would help in centering the cutout on the shelf. Each jig was about a millimeter off in that regard. But for the customer service I would have given two stars. The problem with the overall package is the drill bit, which they strongly encourage you to purchase to ensure the brackets fit correctly. The drill bit is exceptionally weak. It wouldn’t even begin to bore through the mahogany or the poplar. I had to drill smaller pilot holes with better quality bits. Even with the walnut the bit had difficulty and kept getting jammed. So much so that I burned out an $80 24vt battery to my cordless drill. Unfortunately, I did not have a corded drill with a chuck large enough to accommodate the shank of the bit. I still have six holes to drill and will need to drill a series ever larger pilot holes using a portable drill press to get this done without burning out my remaining battery. Great concept, but a product is only as good as its weakest link. In this case it’s the drill bit.

Brackets are good, jig and bit not so much

First, they sent me the wrong size of jig. I called, got a real person, and she fed-exed me the correct jig overnight...so plus points for the excellent customer service. The jig and auger bit for drilling out the holes in back of a shelf are very hard to work with. The self-feeding auger bit grabs the wood so aggressively it's almost impossible to drill a straight hole. I think a less-aggressive bit, and tighter tolerance between the jig and the bit would help.

Hanging self and using Ultrashelf brackets and tools

I bought the DIY brackets, routing jig, and drilling tools. They worked seamlessly and produced a really great result. Shelf looks like it was professionally installed and did not take much time using all the materials provided.

DIY Routing Jig

Jig is working out great. I just a started using in on floating shelves that are a little less than 1.5 inches thick so not much room to rout and keep sufficient thickness on top and bottom surfaces, need to set up carefully.

This jig made routing the shelf so easy. Piece of cake.

non matching equipment

The company packaged and delivered to me support and drill bit that did not match and do not work together. The router pattern did not match either. They offered for me to pay more for the correct equipment. Poor customer service. They indicate this is what i ordered? hmm. seems like their system should be better.
