Router Bit

This is the router bit our routing jigs are built around — the one that cuts the recessed pocket in the back of a shelf or mantel so a Studlock bracket beds in flush and the finished piece sits tight to the wall. It is a 3/4-inch diameter bit, run to a 5/16-inch depth, matched to the DIY, Ultra, and Mantel routing jigs. For the cleanest cut, we recommend a 1/2-inch shank — the larger shaft runs with less vibration and chatter than a 1/4-inch shank, which can be used but tends to chatter more on a 3/4-inch bit. One thing to keep straight: this bit routes the recess channel; it does not drill the support-rod holes — that is what the auger bit is for. Drill those holes first, then rout.
